Male and Female Athletes Recognized at Banquet

Aly Sherman and Kellan Carrell were named the Outstanding Athletes for 2007-2008 at the All Sports Banquet for Mount Vernon High School on Monday, May 5 in the school cafeteria. Sherman received the Most Valuable Hitter award in volleyball, the Most Valuable Player award in basketball, and the Outstanding Athlete in Running Events in girls track. Carrell was also named the Most Valuable Defensive player in basketball.

The Fighting Tiger Award was presented to Whitney Hargraves, Neil Blevins and Jordan Mayes.
Hargraves was named Most Valuable Defensive Player in girls basketball and Outstanding Athlete in Field Events for girls track.

Coach Jason Kennedy named Abbi Stone and Lucas Stewart as the Outstanding Runner in girls and boys cross country, respectively.

In volleyball, Coach Joe Thomas presented to Kelsey Whitlock the Most Valuable Offensive Player award. Kaitlyn Bohlken received the Most Valuable Setter award.

Coach Jim Solomon named Cecily Hooper the Outstanding Girl Tennis Player and Bradley Drabble as the Outstanding Boy Tennis Player.

In golf, Coach Brad Floyd named Shelby Stickels as the Most Valuable Girl Golfer. Coach Floyd also named Dustin Rouse and Cole Halter as Co-Most Valuable Boy Golfers.

A. J. Rockwell was named Outstanding Athlete in Running Events for boys track, and Bryce Barker was named Outstanding Athlete in Field Events by Coach Karl Whitehurst.

Coach Charles Swann named Austin Sparks as the Most Valuable Player in football. Philip Alston was presented the Most Valuable Offensive Player award, and Stanley Wood received the Most Valuable Defensive Player award. Luke Henry was name Oustanding Lineman in football for the second year in a row. Frank Hall was named the Oustanding Back.

In girls basketball, Cristy Whitock received the Hustling Tiger Award, and Kelsey Whitock was named the Offensive Player of the year. Both are the daughters of Dan and Susan Whitlock.

Coach Stephen Weddle named Frank Hall as the Most Valuable Offensive Player in basketball. Christian Butler and Austin Sparks were named co-recipients of the Fighting Tiger award. Taylor Mayes was named Offensive Player of the Year, and Austin Wight as the Defensive Player of the Year in baseball by Coach Andy Player. Coach Player also presented Luke Henry with a senior award.

Coach Donnie Surratt recognized each of the varsity softball players and presented Jennifer Mitchell with a senior award.

Cheerleader sponsor Caitlyn Rutledge recognized and thanked all Mount Vernon High School cheerleaders.

Coach Stephen Ladd provided both the invocation and benediction. The introduction of coaches and other guests was given by Superintendent Rick Flanagan.

Several scholarships were also awarded to students during the banquet.
